Breaking Down Barriers: Creating an Inclusive Pickleball Community
Pickleball is not just a sport; it's a fantastic way to make new friends, stay active, and enjoy some healthy competition. However, we've all seen it happen – the formation of cliques within the recreational pickleball community. While it's natural for people to gravitate toward those they know, it's essential to foster an inclusive environment that welcomes players of all backgrounds and skill levels. In this newsletter, we'll explore how to break down those barriers and create a more welcoming atmosphere for everyone on the court.
Open Play Sessions
One effective way to combat cliques is by introducing structured open play sessions. Designate specific times during the week for all levels of players to come together and enjoy a mix of games. This not only helps players meet new people but also encourages them to play with a broader range of partners and opponents.
Setup Guidelines for Open Play: Some ideas would be as follows:
- - Set up the courts identifying half for 3.5 skill level and below and the other half for 3.5 skill level and above. Let the player decide what side they want to play on.
- - Have a separate paddle stack for both skill levels so when players come off the court, they place their paddles in the stack and wait their turn for the next open court. Encourage players not to pick and choose who they might want to play with.
Mystery Partner
Schedule one morning or afternoon a week for ‘Mystery Partner Play’. Players pull colors or numbers out of a hat (each color or number is in groups of 4). Whoever chooses the same color or number will play a game together to 11 or a maximum of 20 minutes. When that game is done or the 20 minute time limit has been reached, put all colors or numbers back into the hat and choose again.
- If you have a large club, you can have two hats, one for 3.5 skill level and above and one for 3.5 skill level and below. Let people decide which skill level hat (group) they want to be in. By promoting random team assignments, players are more likely to interact with different individuals, breaking the cycle of cliques forming within the sport.
- **(Instead of numbers or colors you can also use a deck of cards to put in the hat as each number is in sets of 4. Just be sure to choose sets or 4 cards based on the number of people you have.)
Social Events
Organize regular social events off the court, such as potlucks, picnics, happy hours, or post-game gatherings. These events provide an opportunity for players to connect on a personal level, creating friendships that extend beyond pickleball.
Buddy System
Implement a buddy system for new players. Pair experienced players with newcomers to help them feel more comfortable and welcome in the pickleball community. This mentoring approach can be an excellent way to integrate individuals who might otherwise feel isolated.
Inclusivity Workshops
Consider hosting workshops or seminars that focus on inclusivity and the importance of breaking down cliques. Sharing stories and discussing the impact of such behavior can be eye-opening for many players.
Community Code of Conduct
Establish a code of conduct that emphasizes the values of respect, inclusivity, and sportsmanship. Make sure all members are aware of the expectations and consequences for failing to adhere to the code.
Communication
Encourage open communication within your pickleball community. Provide a platform for players to voice their concerns, share ideas, and express their desire for a more inclusive environment. Address any issues promptly and transparently.
Lead by Example
As community leaders, set an example by being inclusive, friendly, and approachable. Your behavior can have a profound impact on how others in the group interact.
