The Crucial Role of Hitting in the Middle in Pickleball Years ago, a friend of mine during a coaching session said “Good things happen in the middle”. It took me a while to understand his statement as he was from Kansas, the middle of the country. I assumed he meant that in life, as much as in sports, middle of the road decisions were always safe and productive. Silly me. But I took on this statement as my mantra while I trekked across the world coaching the nuances of playing the middle. In the fast-paced and dynamic world of pickleball, where strategy and precision reign supreme, one fundamental principle stands out: hitting in the middle. While this might seem like a simplistic notion, mastering the art of placing shots in the middle of the court holds significant strategic importance and can often be the difference between winning and losing matches. In this article, we delve into why hitting in the middle is an essential aspect of pickleball strategy. Control of the Court: Hitting the ball towards the middle of the court allows players to maintain control and dictate the pace of the game. By directing shots to the middle, players force their opponents to move laterally, increasing the likelihood of creating openings on the sides of the court for a winning shot. This strategic placement effectively narrows down the opponent's options, making it harder for them to anticipate the next move and react accordingly. I always suggest to players that when in doubt, hitting in the middle is a better strategy. Middle obviously meaning between the two players. Not only does it create confusion but since the ball travels towards the lowest part of the net it gives you a good margin to thread the ball in between players. Splitting Opponents: One of the most advantageous aspects of hitting in the middle is its ability to split opponents. When the ball travels down the middle of the court, it forces both players on the opposing team to decide who will take the shot. This split-second decision-making often leads to confusion and miscommunication between players, resulting in potential errors or missed opportunities. By exploiting this uncertainty, players can gain a strategic advantage and capitalize on their opponents' indecision. Creating Imbalance: Hitting in the middle disrupts the balance of the opposing team's defensive positioning.
